Be Prepared

Be Prepared: Disasters

There’s a difference between the Boy Scouts and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Boy Scout motto is “Be prepared.

Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, was asked, “Be prepared for what?” He replied, “Why, for any old thing.”

The U.S. Coast Guard motto is “Always prepared.

Of all the military services, the U.S. Coast Guard puts itself in harm’s way most often. If they were not “always prepared,” Coast Guard vessels would become part of a disaster instead of an emergency solution.

People in the Coast Guard know what to do in an emergency because they have drilled. During the emergency, they react exactly as they were trained to do. This principle can work for you. Learn by doing – try out the Tips!

You will learn what you practice. The more you learn, the smarter you’ll be.

In a real emergency, remembering that there is a DisasterGuy.com website won’t help you. Bringing along your folder of printed DisasterGuy Tips isn’t going to cut it. The thing that will be useful to you is remembering how to do a DisasterGuy,com Tip – because you have already done it successfully.

Many of our Tips work equally well in Disasters, Camping, and Scouting.
